CoHE’s Distance Learning Analysis Concluded: Maltepe Is The Leader

Maltepe University has proven its success in distance education. The Council of Higher Education (CoHE), analyzed the distance learning process started in universities due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Among the foundation universities in Turkey, Maltepe University achieved the first rank in the number of online classes and live classroom practices at the undergraduate level.

The Council of Higher Education (CoHE) made a one-month data analysis to analyze the case of distance learning process started as part of the precautions taken against the global pandemic. Within the scope of analysis, online performance of universities, including foundation universities, in distance learning is evaluated. 

With the implementation of distance learning, 64% of 189 universities in Turkey has started their operations on March 23, 22% on March 30, 13% on April 6. In this process, CoHE stated that 301.770 classes were held at the undergraduate level in state universities whereas 45.230 classes in foundation universities. According to CoHE’s report, Maltepe University ranked the first, leaving behind all other foundation universities in terms of total number of online and live lectures.

At Maltepe University, 2.532 lectures at the undergraduate level were held as part of distance education and 2.110 lectures were held as live classroom practices. Maltepe University has proven its success in distance education of master's programs, ranking in top 10 among all foundation universities. Other statistical results are as the following:

  • The number of users accessing distance education has reached 10.410 at Maltepe University.
  • Daily access number the system is more than 20.000.
  • The view number of recorded lectures exceeds 40.000.
  • More than 60.000 files and teaching material are uploaded to the system.
  • The number of assignments uploaded to the system is more than 15.000.
  • Cultural events have not came to halt either, nearly 100 events have been held online.
PRESIDENT PROF. KARASAR: WE WERE PREPARED FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION

The President of Maltepe University Prof. Dr. Şahin Karasar states that the success in distance education, which is revealed by the analysis of CoHE, is no surprise, and is a fruit of their planned work. Prof. Karasar expresses that all academic and administrative staff has been performing their duties almost in a sense of mobilization, that prioritizing digitalization, maintaining fast, strong and regular communication, highlighting textualization have a big role in their success.

Expressing that Maltepe University Distance Education Application and Research Center has signed important operations, Prof. Karasar states that distance education has been offered in some programs, primarily MBA and Logistics and Supply Chain Management programs at undergraduate and associate levels since 2005. Prof. Karasar says, “We were prepared for distance education. We were very experienced in giving simultaneous and asynchronous lectures. We have collected its fruits during these days of crisis.”  

Prof. Karasar states that they have been working closely with CoHE during this process under The Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Betül Çotuksöken’s supervision and adds, “We have put an effort, which is almost round the clock and without any time limits. COVID-19 has given us a chance to test our limits; we have seen how well equipped we are in terms of human resources and technical equipment.”

Emphasizing their live classroom operations continue in every aspect, also they are prepared for finals, Karasar states, “Our finals, which will start on June 1st and make-up exams which will come after, will be online, too. Students who want to have face to face exams will have the chance to take make-up exams on campus. In our Faculty of Medicine, exams will be made face to face with every single necessary precaution taken. To enable our students get through this process in a healthy way is our uppermost priority. Everything we do is for them, we are here for them.”
